The brothers Reimar and Walter Horten were among the most famous designers of flying wing aircraft in Germany until the end of World War II. They had brought their experience in this sector to a special unit that, as Sonderkommando 9, was responsible for the further development of flying wing aircraft. The development of the machine called Horten Ho IX, equipped with two jet engines of the type BMW 003A-1, began in 1942. While the first machine could only be completed as a glider due to difficulties with the jet engine, the second prototype received the Jumo engine 004B-1. In 1944 the V2 made its first flight and reached speeds of over 780 km / h. The series production of the hoards was transferred to the Gothaer Waggonfabrik and the type designation was changed to Go 229.
